Spritzmonkey – What's in a name?

At Spritzmonkey we are frequently asked about our name. This has usually been preceded by a puzzled but curious stare at a banner bearing our logo at an event or exhibition accompanied by the internal whirring of the enquirer’s cognitive mechanisms trying to make the connection between Spritzmonkey and Cyber Security. Yes, Cyber Security! The conclusion most come to is that probably there isn’t a link. Until now...

The conversation and questions continue, “shouldn’t a business name actually mean something?”. A relevant question, although it’s safe to opt for a descriptive name that relates to one's business directly leaving the reader in no doubt as to the nature of your work but arguably and perhaps more importantly it needs to be creative and memorable. That’s where the name ‘Spritzmonkey’ stands out amongst others in our field for a variety of reasons. It gets the reader thinking, not only about our name but about what we do. They think about their own business, its security and, what they have or have not done to secure their assets and protect their reputation. Invariably the conversation often returns to the name but now there is a link to Cyber Security in their mind.

It's an interesting tale of how Spritzmonkey, Information Security Consultancy, came about. You see the name bears no resemblance to the type of business it represents but then why should it? Take Häagen-Dazs, Xerox, Kodak, three very well-known brands that are meaningless but over time have become meaningful and are very successful.

That’s not to say the name Spritzmonkey is meaningless. Our line of work in information security, protecting business assets, enhancing a business’ reputation through trusted ISO certification with our partner BSI and our ongoing commitment and hard work to maintain a high level of protection is far from meaningless. In the fast evolving and increasingly threatening world of Cyber activity, you need a competent and trusted advisor and with over twenty years’ experience in their field, our founders, Daren and Jayne decided to go into business to provide that guidance and high level of expertise.

It was whilst on holiday in Italy in 2016 in a small sun-kissed village on the edges of Lake Garda over a glass, or indeed several glasses, of Aperol Spritz (see where this is going?) that the idea of starting a cyber security business began to materialise. Whilst contemplating what the business will ‘look’ like, a small, cuddly, soft toy monkey sat on the edge of the table. Its owner, Daren and Jayne’s young son, takes the monkey everywhere only at this precise moment in time it was sitting next to the cocktail and it was then the name Spritzmonkey came into being.

As the company develops so does our reputation based on excellent feedback from customers, long term trusted relationships, hard work, expert knowledge and commitment and a desire to protect businesses. Recently we have been awarded Platinum Status by BSI in their Associate Consultant Programme, not an award that’s easily achieved and one we are immensely proud of.

As the company grows then so does the name. One day you may read a similar article to this about another business with a creative and memorable name and you just might see within the text, Häagen-Dazs, Xerox, Kodak and Spritzmonkey.

So… what’s in a name?
