For those handling payment information, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) will apply. This is maintained by the PCI Security Standards Council, where PCI DSS was first launched in 2004 and is currently on version 4.0 which was released in March 2022.

Do I need PCI DSS Compliance?

All organisations that retain, process, and transmit cardholder data, such as merchants who are members of card issuing companies and any other service providers should all consider compliance with PCI DSS.

This will include merchants and service providers. Merchants accept debit or credit card payments for goods or services. Service providers who are directly involved in processing, storing or transmitting cardholder data on behalf of another entity also need to comply with PCI DSS. Some organisations can be both a merchant and a service provider if they undertake both of these activities.
